Dietary Suggestions Recommended Following Surgery
For the first 24 hours following surgery, your diet should be soft and cold. Some suggested foods are:
- Malts
- Ginger ale or 7-Up
- Milk Shakes
- Natural fruit juices (high in Vitamin C)
- Yogurt
- Applesauce
- Sego/Ensure
- Fruit & Vegetables in blender (drinkable)
- Milk
- Instant breakfast
- Ice Cream
- Small curd cottage cheese
- Ice Tea
- Baby Food
Diet for One Week:
Your diet after the first 24 hours following surgery, and until your dressings or sutures are removed, should be quite soft and include nutritious food that are high in vitamins and minerals to aid in healing. Such foods include:
- Milk
- Blender fruits and vegetables (soft, no hard pieces)
- Cheese
- Ground beef, pork, or lamb
- Custard
- Eggs, any style
- Yogurt
- Fish
- Cooked Cereals
- Plenty of fluids (especially water)
- Cottage Cheese
- Soup
Any of the items from the first 24-hour diet may also be used. Make certain to follow all of the recommendations on the post surgery instruction care sheet.
Please avoid foods that are hard, sticky or spicy during the week after surgery. Such foods include:
- Popcorn
- Nuts
- Sesame Seeds
- Pizza
- Candy
- Gum
- Dried Fruits
- Peanut Butter
- Crackers
- Pastries
- All breads
